about
The core of "Love Will Wither" was recorded in 2007, when The Chairmaker was still known as Zakalwe. The band never finished the song but decided to return to it in 2022, with the intention of releasing it alongside other older songs as part of a retrospective collection (forthcoming), for which it serves as an advance single. The song explores themes of displacement, conflict and resistance. In the end, it is a song about hope.
lyrics
Dreams of the Road of Bones; dreams of the end of free thought;
Dreams of a girl with brown eyes, braver than heroes'.
Dreams of Gaels and Kazakhs, long walks to injustice;
Dreams of exile, marketed as “Freedom.”
It’s the truth that no-one told us:
in the end, love will wither …
It’s written on the gravestones in code.
The old man on the park bench, with an empty seat beside him,
He knows that love will wither …
Scatter seed across the hard earth; raise your children harsh and strong,
Hewn like flint, fragmented and shattered.
Teach the ways of fear and loathing; teach the weapons of the gods.
Instruments of wrath, descending heaven.
It’s the truth that no-one told us,
That in the end, love will wither…
It’s written on the gravestones in code.
The old man on the park bench, with an empty seat beside him,
He knows that love will wither, in the end …
Andrei awakens in a lonely room that once was home to joyful union:
Warm limbs entangled, in the spring of ’55 and forty-seven winters since then.
They held each other through the poverty. They lost their youth to the world.
It’s the truth that no-one told us,
That, in the end, love will wither …
It’s written on the gravestones in code.
The old man on the park bench, with an empty seat beside him,
He knows that love will wither every foe.
Love will wear away the mountains.
Love will break the storm.
